In the late 1990s, PFERD introduced thin cut-off wheels to the market. This caused an avalanche of scepticism as the wheels were perceived as dangerous and wasteful with a short product lifespan. Yet today, PFERD developed a range of thin cut-off wheels so successful that their 1 billionth wheel was sold at the beginning of 2021. PFERD was able to identify a need in the market to make cutting faster and more convenient while still reducing burr formation and ensuring product longevity. With this in mind, they set to work, developing a thin cut-off wheel that minimised vibrations, noise and dust, was easier to handle, offered lower cost per cut, and could be operated under minimal manual effort. They then removed the unnecessary metal ring from the middle of the discs to provide the thin, flat and light feel in your hand. This allowed PFERD to increase performance by a factor of 20 and achieved its key aim to significantly improve efficiency and optimise productivity.

Cut-off wheels can be extremely dangerous and even fatal when misused. Thin cut-off wheels can easily cut through INOX stainless steel and mild steel. Pressure can be applied to them or, you can let your hand guide the wheel with the weight of the angle grinder you’re using to deliver a precise cut with little burr formation, every time. An angle grinder's cut-off wheels can spin at over 280 kilometres per hour, which is why using cheap, poorly designed wheels can be very unsafe. While other thin cut-off wheels may cut well, they deteriorate quickly. PFERD's discs require fewer wheel changes and offer better performance overall. They are perfect for workshops and tradespeople who are looking to get more cuts, longer-lasting tools, fewer wheel changes, less downtime, reduced burrs and less material wastage. These cut-off wheels do not contain any ferrous, chlorinated or sulphurous fillers that can cause metal corrosion and are the embodiment of extreme cutting performance.

Thin cut-off wheels are a core product at PFERD and their ultra-thin Steelox 125mm by 1mm cut-off wheel is their number one top-selling product and the best performing thin cutting wheel in Australia. PFERD offers an extensive range of thin manual cut-off wheels available in diameters varying from 105mm to 230mm and widths ranging from 0.8mm to 1.9mm.
