Discover how Blundstone is taking steps to lessen its footprint without compromising on durability.
Blundstone has a history of never standing still. From humble beginnings in Hobart to building their present-day global value chain network, Blundstone has been putting its best foot forward for more than 150 years.
Sustainability isn’t a new focus for Blundstone. Over their long history, their commitment to quality, durability, and community has been constant. The difference now is that their community reaches the furthest points of the globe. So as technology and knowledge of environmental impact improve, too will the scale of their social response.
| The ESB ProgramEach step they take must be better than the last. That’s the promise they make. It’s also the guiding principle that drives their Every Step Better (ESB) Program. |
| |
| Blundstone launched the ESB program to encapsulate its ongoing commitment to people, product, and planet. They conducted an in-depth Sustainability Impact Assessment to measure and assess their existing practices and impacts. They also listened closely to everyone who makes, sells, and wears Blundstone boots and made those priorities their priorities. |
| Using Resources Responsibly
Blundstone understands that its environmental impact extends beyond its footwear. They are also serious about lowering the environmental impact of their packaging and keeping harmful chemicals out of the manufacturing process.
In 2022, Blundstone won the APCO Industry Sector Award as an Australian business leading the way in sustainable packaging design and innovation. All Blundstone shoe boxes, product information cards, and additional footbed packaging are made from 100% recycled material and are 100% recyclable. | |
| Rethinking Boot Design for a Better Future
In 2019, Blundstone redesigned its flagship heavy-duty work and safety boots and created the RotoFlex range. Using 3D-printing technology for the RotoFlex counter stiffeners helps avoid waste off-cuts and contributes to decreased shipping weight and emissions. The stiffener material includes 45% recycled content. Explore the Blundstone 9090 RotoFlex Zip-Up Safety Boots, built with a premium water-repellent nubuck leather upper and a non-metallic penetration-resistant insole. The Vibram TC4+ outsole delivers slip, abrasion, cut, heat (to 300°C), and fuel oil resistance, while full Kevlar® stitching and a heavy-duty industrial zip add durability. The laces are made from 100% recycled PET, and the Artico lining regulates temperature to reduce sweat. An airflow footbed enhances ventilation and cushioning for long-wear comfort. Or check out the 9010 RotoFlex Lace-Up Safety Boots, crafted from water-resistant nubuck leather with a heavy-duty outsole for grip and stability. Laces and lining are made from 100% recycled PET, with the lining also providing moisture-wicking performance. These boots offer heat resistance to 300°C, fuel oil resistance, and a broad-fitting steel toe cap. An airflow footbed and comfort system improve stability, balance, and manoeuvrability while reducing the risk of trips, slips, and falls. |
Responsibly Sourced Leather
Leather is a key component of Blundstone’s quality commitment. 95% of their leather is sourced from Leather Working Group (LWG) certified suppliers. For those not yet LWG rated, Blundstone conducts on-site verification audits to ensure compliance with its ethical standards and Code of Conduct.

Material Choices and Durability
Blundstone has conducted life cycle assessments (LCAs) on key styles to evaluate environmental impacts and set benchmarks for new designs. They’re seeking out new materials that deliver on the Blundstone DNA while reducing their impact on the planet.
